This year marks the 40th anniversary of the debut of Subaru all-wheel drive.
The Japanese Leone Estate Van 4WD was the first to use it in 1972. Subaru AWD technology has evolved for 40 years, and as of January 31, 2012, total worldwide production of Subaru AWD vehicles (including part-time 4WD vehicles) was 11,782,812 units.
